Getting married in Winter: is it possible?
Winter is coming and wedding season is slowing down, but not stopping!
It often happens that brides and grooms decide to tie the knot in this period, which is obviously much colder than Spring or Autumn, but also offers plenty of options for a charming and unforgettable wedding.
Here in this article I am happy to share some considerations I wrote about winter weddings that were published on the well known Brazilian wedding blog “Icasei“.

For non Brazilian speaking people, here you can find all tips:
What are the pros and cons to make a winter wedding? Are the prices lower at this time of the year or is this a myth?
Winter weddings are less common in Northern Italy, where I live and work, therefore prices of suitable locations are for sure better and it is much easier to find availability.
Some vendors, like some photographers, can also offer better rates in this period during which they have less work.
For some other vendors, like florists, it doesn’t change that much because they might have less weddings, but usually work a lot during Christmas period for festivities and business company events.
Weather is for sure one of the cons of this season, but in Italy it is plenty of beautiful villas and hotels that can offer a marvelous background for a winter wedding. They will create a cosy and warm atmosphere all around you and will let you forget the cold temperatures outside. You will not be able to stay outdoor for your reception, but who needs an al fresco dinner when there are charming ancient walls ready to welcome your guests in a very elegant and refined environment?
In this period you can then have some flowers that are hard to find in spring and absolutely not available in Summertime, like anemone, cyclamen, ranunculus, hellebore. These flowers will let you make your floral decorations full of warm and vivid colors. And if you like an all white marriage, which season is better to obtain this result? You might be blessed by the snow in this period. Can you imagine a more romantic atmosphere for a wedding?
Candle light and special lights will then enlighten your reception because night starts earlier than in summertime, but if you know how to play with lights, result can be really charming and even better than a summer wedding.
What should you be careful about when planning a winter wedding?
Being weather quite cold in winter season, it is important to choose the right wedding dress and combine it with an elegant jacket or very warm shawl.
Rain or snow could be a problem in this period, but if you choose a venue with an easy access by car, nobody will complain for the bad weather and ladies will not have troubles with their high heeled shoes.
How to choose the best place to get married in winter?
It is important to know that in some areas, like Lake Como for example, many venues close for winter break.
This is quite common for areas that have tourism mainly during summer season.
Therefore it is necessary to choose places that work all year. Milan or Bergamo, for example, offer many beautiful locations that are absolutely suitable for a wonderful wedding in Italy.
There are ancient villas and charming hotels in the earth of these towns or in the countryside nearby the cities that are perfect for a winter wedding.
Moreover the proximity to a big town offers the possibility to easily reach it by plane and let the guests spending some time visiting interesting areas and museums or, why not, going shopping. This is usually less easy in areas that only have summer tourism.
For the couples who are planning a destination wedding – is it cheaper to travel during winter?
Traveling during winter time is usually cheaper if you choose areas that do not have winter tourism only. So mountain areas are a charming option, but for sure not cheaper.
If you instead choose countryside areas or towns, prices are usually a bit lower, because there is less tourism, but Christmas time is absolutely to avoid if you wish to save some money on travel expenses.
What is the best type of food to serve in winter weddings?
Italy is famous for delicious food and during winter time it doesn’t give the lie to its reputation.
In this period it is recommended to choose food that warms you up, like risotto or ravioli with cheese (in Italy it is plenty of tasty cheeses suitable for a good first course). Meat with rich condiments and fat fishes like salmon are then for sure better in this period than in others. And what about offering hot chocolate together with sweets buffet?
